- What is Chingri Maachh?
- Chingri Maachh has been created with the intention of supporting the subcontinental diaspora in Australia. The idea is to assist New Expats as well as provide community support for those settling in/already settled in Australia.
- Why should I join/Yet another registration?
- Use Chingri Maachh to help your compatriates by correcting the 'Newcomer' information, answering their questions, and sharing your own experinces. Guests (non registered users) may comment, post discussion topics, and events. Members are able to add their personal blogs, for example for stories of their own 'firsts' in Australia, as well as use the graphical tools for easy content editing.
As a community site, we're using member partication/feedback as key factors for future Chingri Maachh features. If you would like to see/change something on this site, get voting, commenting, and posting!
- How do I use the blogging tools?
- As a Chingri Maachh member, you can create and grow your own blog. For more on how to use the content editor to format text and add images, visit Shrimpy's blog entry.
Known issues
There is a known issue with the content editor. In order to add Youtube etc videos to your blog, you switch away from the rich-text editor and paste in the video HTML, however if you return to re-edit the post the rich-text editor drops your nicely embedded video HTML tags. Something to be wary of if you're planning to post and then return/re-edit your video blog entry.
- How do I participate in the discussion forum?
- You can add/reply to topics in the discussion forums. If you're asking a question on the forum, the more detail you add, the higher the likelihood of getting an appropriate answer. For example, a poorly phrased question would be 'How is the IT industry in Australia?', whereas 'How is Sydney for someone with 3 years J2EE experience in finance/insurance product development?' would be clearer, and easier for others to respond to.
The previous paragraph is included in the 'sticky' at the top of the discussion topics. Once you've reviewed the 'sticky', just click Post new forum topic. Both members, and guests (too much spam resulted in closure of the open posting policy) may post to the discussion forums. However the editor toolbar with a graphical interface for adding formatted content and images is only available to members.
- How do I notify the community about an interesting/relevant event?
- You can add/update an event to the events calendar. Both members,
and guests(due to excessive spam submissions, you now have to log in to submit an event) may add events. However the editor toolbar with a graphical interface for adding formatted content and images is only available to members.
- How can I sell my old PC/car/khana pakana?
- You can add/update a classified ad and use it to buy/sell anything from household goods to home cooked meals. Both members, and guests may add classifieds. However the editor toolbar with a graphical interface for adding formatted content and images is only available to members. Sellers, don't forget to give buyers a way to contact you.
- I've just arrived/will arrive very soon, where can I learn more about getting settled?
- The New Expats pages contain lots of information, specifically for those enroute/just arrived in Australia. Add content/corrections be leaving a comment. As Chingri Maachh develops, we will be looking to grant members 'editor' status so that they can update such content.
- I'm researching/interested in studying in an Australian university. Where can I learn more?
- For now, see Chingri Maachh's Destination Australia: Why and Destination Australia: How informational pages. We are working on additional student-specific information, so stay posted for more.

- I have a suggestion/correction for something on Chingri Maachh. What do I do?
- We encourage members to participate in the growth and development of Chingri Maachh by contacting us.
- I'm interested in creating an interest group within Chingri Maachh. For example, I would like my community of Chowpatty Bhelpuri Lovers to have their own blog and discussion forum so that we can share recipes and restaurant research results, how do I do that?
- This is amongst the many features we envision in Chingri Maach's future. We need to prioritise which feature is implemented next. Member participation by way of blogs, votes, discussion topics, and contacting us will help us is developing the 'living' Chingri Maachh roadmap.
