Living In Australia
Arrival Checklist
Beginning to hyperventilate at the thought of everything that needs to be done once you've disembarked? Prioritized task lists to the rescue! Here's a first stab:
- Where to live?
- Choose a city/town (factors: family, jobs).
- Create a shortlist of the city's areas you would like to live (factors: public transportation, cost).
- Check online sites to see if you can secure a place to stay prior to arrival. (I opted for a shared apartment, and used email to find a place to stay before arriving. If travelling with family, you could opt for a serviced apartment to start with and use local real estate agents to find something more long term.)
- Get a job (TFN, resume/cv advice, job websites, etc.)
- Medical coverage (Medicare and private coverage)
- Moving money and opening a bank account
- Utilities (gas, electricity, phone, internet, cable) and driving licenses (for NSW (Sydney), Canberra (ACT), VIC (Melbourne), SA (Adelaide), WA (Perth), and Brisbane (QLD))
