Water Restrictions

Another factor you may want to consider when selecting a city, is water restrictions. I touched on Australia being the driest continent earlier (Australia has been in an official drought for the last 6 years). Being a Sydney-resident, my information about the other cities is second-hand and anecdotal (comments from residents welcome!).

  • Adelaide: No watering of lawns; hand held hose for plants only at restricted times/days.
  • Brisbane: Outdoor sprinklers and hoses banned;, watering can or bucket watering severely restricted times/days; topping up of household pools prohibited, washing of personal vehicles prohibited, target consumption of 140 litres per person per day (inspectors conduct spot-checks and issue fines/turn water off)
  • Canberra: No watering of lawns; hand held hose for plants only at restricted times/days.
  • Melbourne: No watering of lawns; hand held hose for plants only at restricted times/days.
  • Sydney: Outdoor sprinklers and hoses banned;, watering can or bucket watering severely restricted times/days; topping up of household pools prohibited, washing of personal vehicles prohibited, target consumption of 140 litres per person per day (inspectors conduct spot-checks and issue fines/turn water off)
